The monographic
CDs of
Studiolum cover many
fundamental aspects of the literature of the Renaissance and
Baroque. The first CDs deal with the world of emblems and
imprese, as well as closely related fields of
Renaissance symbolism, such as
hieroglyphs or mythographies.
For each work included we generally
provide the first edition, but in the majority of instances we
also offer the most influential
edition, or the one with the best commentary. On
occasion, the joint publication of several editions allows them
to be compared easily, as in a critical
edition.
For Greek and Latin authors we have
added contemporaneous translations – from the sixteenth
and seventeenth centuries – into
English, French, Italian or German. In addition, for Greek
authors we include the Latin
translations used throughout the Renaissance.

• We
offer our works with a complete and literal transcription
with the entire apparatus of notes, indices, tables and
complementary materials present in the original, along with all of
their illustrations. On this first level, we have refrained from
introducing any emendations or ratifications to the text, thus
avoiding the risk of our eliminating markings, mechanisms of
transmission and influences that could only be detected with the
book just as it was originally.
• They are fully searchable texts.
The works are all analyzed, the different languages and types of
text utilized are marked, a corpus of sentences and proverbs, of
mottos, of inscriptiones and iconographic elements present in the
illustrations, is generated, and the programme provides a search panel
which can be used to formulate queries and obtain the desired
results quickly.
In addition, the texts are linked
in such a way that one can simultaneously view the same passage(s)
from different editions of a given work, or related passages from
different works.
• Besides the literal transcription, we
offer the modernization of the entire text
in a hidden field, which allows for word or phrase searches with the
original or normalized orthography, making it unnecessary to be
familiar with the original orthography of each work. Thus, one can
read a text with its original Spanish orthography of the sixteenth century faithfully reproduced, or the Tuscan orthography of the
period, or in Renaissance Latin, but searches of terms can be
carried out – if so desired – using modern Spanish or Italian
orthography or, in the case of Latin, that defined by the
authoritative dictionary of Georges.
• Finally, we provide for our texts
abundant notes
in which we clarify explicit quotations, and in many cases, other
aspects: textual problems, philological commentary, and so on. Annotated
quotations are always linked to their original work whenever they
are found in one of the other CDs published by Studiolum.
The introductions, inscriptiones, mottoes, and descriptions of the
illustrations are in Spanish and English.
For the language of consultation, the programme offers the choice of
Spanish, English, German or Portuguese.
Each book published includes a
presentation file that explains the context and editorial
history of the work.
The consultation interface, simple and
intuitive, has been designed with a series of indices:
• Individualized indices of words for each of the languages that
appear in all of the books.
• Iconographic index, with a description in Spanish and
English, of all the picturae.
• Index of inscriptiones, both of the mottoes
themselves, as well as of other texts that may appear in the
illustrations.
• Index of the sententiae, refrains and proverbial
phrases.
• Index of notes.
• Index of quotations.
• Index of the loci communes or
topoi of the culture of the period that appear throughout the
works.
• The introduction
of each CD provides detailed information on the characteristics of
the programme, which does not require any technical expertise on the
part of the user.
• The programme does not allow for direct copying of textual
fragments. Studiolum edits its works with careful analysis and
almost infinite possibilities for linked searches. To compensate for
the restriction on copying, we have provided an additional resource
on our CDs that we consider to be extraordinarily useful:
• The user will be able to add
personal annotations, or even whole new texts, as well as
change or erase the existing ones, or reorganize their hierarchical
structure or their fields. Modifications will be stored in a
shadowfile. This file displays, from its own space, the intact texts
from the primitive database along with those that have been
modified; therefore, by using this file instead of the original
database, texts can be edited to satisfy personal needs.
• For the presentation of texts with non-Latinate writing – for
the time being, Greek and Hebrew – we have constructed two complete
sets of typographical fonts: "Grecs du roi", and "Gaon", the use of
which is unrestricted for the owner of the CD.
• The CDs are offered in a version for use with a PC (Windows
9x, NT, 2000, XP). They will also function on the Macintosh
Operating System of Apple provided that you also have installed an
emulator such as Virtual PC.
• In order to be fully functional each CD must be
registered via Internet by
following some simple instructions. The same CD can be registered up
to three times per year, whether on the same computer or on three
different computers.
